Last week, I was so thrilled to have been invited to lead a caregiving panel discussion at the Eldercare Planning Symposium for the MICPA. This was a continuing education event for CPAs and attorneys at the MSU Management Education Center. Since caregiving is one of the areas I focus on with my clients and I would receive CE credits for CFP, I was thrilled to attend the day which included topics on: the real costs of long term care, emerging trends in estate planning, identity theft and the elderly, how to judge financial capacity, and and my panel of experts which focused on the topic- Caregiving: America’s Rising Job Segment.
Our panelists:
- Wealth Coach, John Dankovich of MKD Wealth Coaches, LLC talked about new trends in caregiving and long term care policies
- Elder law Attorney, Harley Manela of Mall, Malisow & Cooney PC, talked about challenges for family members being paid to perform caregiving services for other family members, Medicaid, VA and more
- CPA, Stuart Sakwa of Silverman, Kaplan & Sakwa PC, share tax and non tax issues for those who want to hire caregivers themselves vs hiring a firm
- Bert Copple is the owner of Home Instead Senior Care franchise, and talked about the benefits of using an agency for caregiving and the challenges we are facing with a severe shortage of caregivers
It was a content rich panel discussion and the entire day has inspired me to bring more light to this topic of caregiving, by offering my Designated Daughter Caregiving Workshop to our community in 2017. In addition, I will be interviewing former President of Michigan Hospice, Dottie Deremo, on Smart Women Talk Radio, next week and then Bert Copple, owner of Home Instead, in December.
In the meantime if you have any questions or financial concerns about getting organized, creating a caregiving plan, or reviewing documents, please give me a call at (248) 366-0137 or email me at katana@katanaabbott.com. Next week, I’ll be sharing a new free resource I’ve created to help you as the Designated Daughter.
