Earlier this month, I was thrilled to have attended one of the most unique musical events. Each year, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Volunteer Council (DSOVC), creates a series of Musical Feasts where music lovers experience the DSO musicians in unique settings. Most are in beautiful homes of individuals who love the DSO. It’s a fabulous way to entertain your friends, connect personally with musicians and make a difference.

On May 20th, the DSOVC created something very special at the Detroit Zoo’s new Penguin Exhibit where 80 individuals were greeted by champagne and a DSO string quartet overlooking the new penguin habitat.
We journeyed through the exhibit to our exquisite dinner, passing through what seemed like being on a ship in Antarctica with water and wind — a must see experience. Steve and Bobbi Polk gave $10 million to create this exhibit for the zoo, and that evening they were our generous hosts as well.
I am sharing this wonderful event to commend these marvelous women who give so tirelessly not only raising money for the DSO, but creating unique musical experiences for the community. This is important since we are a community based orchestra.
I want to thank all of them (since there are too many to list!), with a special shout out to Ginny Lundquist, Esther Lyons, Ellie Tholen, Mary Beattie, Gwen Bowlby, Magda Moss and Marlene Bihlmeyer who have worked quietly behind the scenes on these projects for years! If you would like to be invited to these events, join the VC and support this important project, email Esther Lyons at VolunteerCouncil@DSO.org
We love and thank ALL WOMEN who volunteer in our communities and are making a difference! Cheers and hugs from Smart Women’s Empowerment!
